The Gulf of Mexico is beautiful, but ocean safety is extremely important.
A rip current is a powerful channel of water moving away from shore. Rip currents can happen on any beach and can quickly pull swimmers away from land.
Look for:
🫧 Darker water moving away from shore
🫧 A break in normal wave patterns
🫧 Foam or seaweed moving offshore
🫧 A channel where waves are not breaking
🫧 A noticeable change in water color
💙 Stay calm.
💙 Do not swim directly against the current.
🫧 Float or tread water.
🫧 Swim parallel to the shoreline until you are out of the current.
🫧 Once free, swim diagonally back toward shore.
🫧 If you cannot escape, wave your arms and call for help.
Remember:
Rip currents do not pull you underwater—they pull you away from shore.
Always check beach flags and swim near lifeguards whenever possible.
